Straw Hat
Straw Hat
Is there any way to reshape a crushable straw hat.?

I have a new straw hat… the kind that’s packable and crushable. The left and the right side of the brim are rolled differently and it looks lopsided and ridiculous.

Is there any way at all to smooth and reshape the brim so that both sides are even?

Thanks so much!

(I can’t exchange it because the gift came from a store 5000 km away. I absolutely LOVE the hat and hope there is a way to fix it!)

Greetings! You will need an iron and an ironing board or a flat surface it is safe to iron on. Make sure the iron will make a good steady steam. Fill the hat with something (a bowl, a towel, a sack of flour(in paper, not plastic :) ) so that the brim will lay flat on the ironing board. with the iron on high heat and making good steam place it as close to the brim as you can without really touching it. sooth the brim with your hand in the shape you want and apply steam. once the straw is warm and wet you can lay something on the brim to keep it flat or roll it the way you like. be patient and repeat. if it doesn’t work turn the iron down, make sure the straw is damp and apply the heat directily (start on a low heat and work your way up). straw is a very forgiving and flexible fiber…just be sure not to break the fibers and you should be able to do what you like with it!
