Small Pets

The prestigious places to find small pets?
I'm looking to buy a small animal, somewhat like a guinea pig or a leopard gecko. I've heard horror stories about animals larger chains like PetSmart, so I'm nervous about buying them. PetSmart is a good place to buy small pets? If not, does anyone know of a pet distributor in good standing in South Carolina, preferably Charleston or Myrtle Beach?
I used to work at PetSmart. Policy making is that all pets "vet checked" before being put out for sale, and prior to being locked in a room separate "quiet" on the back so if they come with some problem does not spread to others. They are kept there for at least a week to make sure that no "hidden" symptoms. All have a Banfield Animal Hospital PetSmarts home with at least one physician who specializes in exotic or small pets. PetSmarts also have a guaranteed two weeks of animals small, so if something happens you can bring back or get a new one. I've seen seen some of these "horror" stories and videos that PETA or whoever makes out about how animals are treated at PetSmart, and is just ridiculously exaggerated or erroneous information. I was in my shop about 10 months and never saw abuse of any kind, but on the contrary, specialists in small animals were cared for and well informed. Of course, as the staff goes, every store is different, but every shop has a "Specialty Manager, who personally oversees the small animal department and ensures that everyone is doing their job. I have three guinea pigs at PetSmart for about a year and everyone is happy and healthy. With the company's largest stores usually get a better warranty. They are great for a reason! Good luck!
