For your question sounds as if you can not afford any dog let alone a Husky! What with vet bills, vaccinations, HW Preventive and food just to name a few? How will you deal with it? Ask, what do you want a Husky? Due to a couple of movies, perhaps? It does not sound as if they have done their homework ANY race. They are NOT "starter" dogs by any stretch of the imagination. They require a very experienced owner! Huskies are a special breed that is definitely not for everyone. Yes, they are beautiful. Everyone loves them. And they have many good points as bad. Some of the positive points: 1. They love all people of all ages. 2. They love the company. 3. They are extremely intelligent. 4. They are tolerant and forgiving. 5. Clean with little or no "dog" smell. Some people who are allergic to other breeds can live with Huskies. 6. Usually quiet. Rarely cortex, except in the game, but we talk "or howl like their wolf ancestors for no reason. 7. They do not require a large amount of food. (Get a good fuel miles) 8. They are honest. His body language and voice can be taken at face value 9. They are not fussy eaters and will eat almost everything you do not eat them first. Without however, do require a proper diet. (See item 6 below) 10. Usually gets along with other well adjusted canines but they will be a challenge if offered. Some of the bad points: 1. They love people …. any people. This is sometimes seen as a lack of loyalty. 2. I do not think there is a type of dog that could be friendlier a Husky. A Husky may alert you by his actions (running to a door or window, etc) but is not a watchdog, if by any stretch of the imagination. By contrast, will invite the bad guy and show him in the good stuff is. And then help carry it out! It's in the breeding and I doubt he can train differently. Even if you abuse them (We have several that were very abused) they do not become mean … just going to keep you. They may be able (or not) to defend against an attacker (more likely with an animal attacker). He may well be a deterrent to someone looking to do bad things …. a hungry wolf "looking" dog looking at them through the window …. 3. They have a strong desire to run. This was bred into them for hundreds of generations. You can not train out of them within a few months of obedience classes. Should be kept in a safe area. And taken in open areas with a belt. They are escape artists like a hairy Houdini. They have been known to jump or climb over 6 foot fences. If they can not go on it will go below it. 4. They are extremely intelligent and mischievous. You have to be smarter than they are to stay ahead of them. Do not laugh. It is true that are smarter than most people. 5. They are too independent and willing to follow through obedience training. (See # 4 above). They know and understand the command, but if I do not see the point of carrying it out will not. 6. They are very enthusiastic and efficient hunter / murderers. 7. They must be kept busy. A BORED HUSKY IS A DESTRUCTIVE HUSKY! (See # 10 and up) 8. They shed. MORE! All year. Then twice a year or more going to "blow" their coats. This takes shedding to a whole new level. 9. Cavan …. MORE! You can rent your yard to NASA to train astronauts. 10. They play ROUGH! Very difficult. And sometimes you can draw blood. But remains the game. 11. They need company, either human or canine, and will be miserable without it. Although it can survive outdoors they really need to be within with their "pack" … …. YOU! 12. They can live 12 to 14 years. Maybe more. This is not a bad thing. But you can live with a child under 2 years so long? That's what happens with a Husky in your life. Again, do your homework! Know what you are getting yourself into. If you can not handle the challenge unfortunately it will be the Husky that pay the price. If you decide you can handle the problem, go through a rescue group. DO NOT go to a pet store or backyard breeder. 25 years of being owned by Siberian Huskies. Currently I have 14 Huskies most of whom were rescued by us from people who do not know what they were getting into
