Im in Pretoria (near Johannesburg) adults MacDonalds meal – food MacDonald children R25 – R16-00 can in Coca-Cola – R4-50 School Fees (per month) – R600 milk (government) up Pan-R5-00 a loaf – R10-00 for 2 liters Its cheaper to cook your food from scratch eating out. Convenience foods are more expensive. Prices of meat and vegetables vary from place to place if you can afford it – buy from Woolworths, along PicknPay or Spar (all grocery stores) Some sites advertising cheap vegetables (fruits and vegetables from the Municipal Market or housewives) – but do not buy more than they can eat in 4 days because its usually ripe and spoil before you can eat it. We have good food here, South Africans love to braai (barbecue) and eat more red meat other countries. And Biltong is raw meat that has dried up – sounds Aweful but tastes good. "Dry Wors is dried raw sausage – also good. Security … have to be more alert than we are accustomed. Close doors and windows at night, lock the car if you are in a mall or at night. Be careful when she offers to help people (not picking up hitchhikers) Do not hand money to people begging at traffic lights, or buy things from the sales guys at the light (vegetables, fake perfumes, sunglasses and fake dvds) Try not to go to public places until they know the area. Most things happen to foreigners when they are on a lonely beach / walking trail on foot or in the home of clubs, etc. Take care everyone, no matter how good it looks. What is your religion? The best way joining a new area and find like-minded people is to join a church. You can meet people who will gladly help with information on nearby shops / Schools / etc English is the spoken language. I lived in South Africa for 30 years. Two years ago someone tried to steal her purse, I put together my baby in a blanket in the truck BabySeat. I saw this lady to get the blanket (which was about 2 feet away) and I was so mad because I thought I was touching my baby. When I realized my purse was gone I cried at the top of my voice "who stole my wallet" in 30 seconds my bag was found and disappeared the lady. That is the only crime I can think of that has happened. Our house has an alarm, which are linked to a security firm called Chubb. We are well aware. We had to chase people from our garden on the night before (thieves), but pursued before coming to our house. We have a dog that barks at every noise strangers in the night – that's a deterant. I also called to be protective, but my three children (under 5 years) are supervised at all times (at school / home by me or my domestic employee) will not let go anywhere unaccompanied. If your children are older, you need to know the parents of children like what they do. Do not worry, but when you get here with care.
