Nylon Choker
Nylon Choker
Are there any restrictions on leashes and collars in AKC conformation shows?

OK all you trainers / dog showers out there, I’ve got a question that I can’t seem to find the answer to. I’m entering my smooth collie puppy in a couple of outdoor shows in a couple of days. I use a martingale/limited-slip (AKA greyhound) collar and a nylon leash. I’d like to know if there are any restrictions to using these, or will I have use a slip-type (I.e. choker) collar?

You can use any collar/leash that you want, even a rope. ( no kidding! One girl’s dog won with a rope) of course pinch collars are out..Martingales are fine.
You just want to use what shows off your dog the best, and distracts the least. You don’t want to draw attention to anything but your dog.

Your own clothing should set a backdrop for the dog..either by contrast or a neutral color. .Solid colors are best.

Don’t wear clothing that highlights your jugs or fanny bouncing, as ‘that’ movement distracts from your dog.

Wear black or brown/tan shoes, so the dogs gait/foot movement shows best..

Keep the leash light, so it folds in your hand, crumpled. If a dog needs heavy gear, he isn’t ready for the ring.

Note: I show sighthounds. I have never seen a thick collar being used..Our typical collars are cords..or fine chains, about like the western bolo tie cord.
