The answer is, for better and more secure connection, at the end of the copper tube must be inserted to the maximum depth installation, and then "stamped" or tight. You do not say if this is a 2-piece ferrule or splint alone, so it provides a measure of the depth is impossible. I've never seen a small diameter compression setting that is deep enough to go more than about 12 mm or 1 / 2 inch. You might be okay go a little less than a 1 / 2 inch, but never less than 3 / 8 inch.
