Can a typical home sewing machine handle heavy canvas? Say, for making a boat cover?
I am a machine technician sewing and tell him … YES. Most any sewing sewing machine what you want with the right thread, needle, and the establishment of tension. But the question is for how long? Not much time with the newer machines, plastic. The gears do not hold up and the tape may slip or burn engine .. For this type of machine that requires one of the old with all steel gears and preferably without the belt as a singer Singer 15-91 or 201. These are not so hard to find. eBay, Craigslist, etc. Even an old man with a belt will do well as a singer of 66 (most common), but make sure you have the proper needle, maybe a size 18 and change every two hours. Hilo also matters, you need upholstery or button thread. The heavier the more flexible tissue tension at the top has to be. Practice on scrap until its upper and lower good. You also need to adjust the presser foot pressure so you eat well. No files attached is a "foot by foot you can attach that will move the top layer of material along with the bottom layer.
