Litter training a dog?

Has anyone tried to litter train their dog? Purina makes the Second Nature dog litter. My dog has had no luck crate training or housebreaking in general. Is the litter worth a shot? Anyone have experience with it?

My friends have a French bulldog that is litter trained. They started him off when he was a puppy by using those piddle pads. They then moved the pad into the litter box. Over the course of several weeks, they cut the pad smaller and smaller until the dog was trained to use the litter.

The problem with is that you can’t take the dog anywhere because it doesn’t know to ask to go out. Since many people don’t have a litter box to accommodate it, it will just pee on the floor. I’ve had to ask my friends NOT to bring their dog to my house anymore. It’s just stupid.

Crate training works if you do it right. It is the only way to housebreak a dog without tearing all your hair out. There is a correct way to do it and many incorrect ways to screw it up. (Using a crate that’s too big, leaving the dog in the crate for too long, using the crate to punish the dog, teasing the dog while he’s in the crate, etc.)

Go back to the crate training. There are several great sites that give all the info you need.

Given a dog’s response to crate training, my money is on the likelihood that you were the problem and not the dog. Try again.
