Any topical medication to get rid of dog cataracts?
We can’t afford to dig up the money for surgery so I was wondering if there are any medications that could help.

No there is none. Cataracts are a physical deformity. Therefor need to be fixed physically by surgery. If it is an old dog and being blind doesn’t bother it, don’t stress. It is quite likely an unnecessary expense.

Keep the hair trimmed from around the eyes and if need be the vet can give you some eye drops to help keep the eyes them selves damp, and reduce irritations.

They don’t need to be operated on unless they are causing your dog distress or a lot of discomfort.

Some of the human eye drops for ‘dry eyes’ are suitable as well. But you would need to talk to a chemist to make sure they are only for dry eyes and not for allergies.

Cataracts are VERY common in older dogs, and always have been. I have never put a dog through surgery or the post op stress, but have seen some that I personally felt were better off left alone.

If your vet is insistent on the op, get a second opinion from a vet who is not connected to the current vets clinic.
Get them to explain the pro’s and con’s of either doing or not doing the op
