Is it right to ask all breeders to curb breeding in areas of over population?
I am sadden by the reports of dogs being killed because there are not enough homes to care for them. The Pit Bull is a good example. In many cities, they are killed because they are pits and hard to place. Is it right to require pit breeders to stop breeding until the problem is solved? It makes sense, but I don’t want any breed of dog to disappear and we need good breeders to keep them around.
Overpopulation is a myth. (yes, here come the thumbs down).
The issue is over abandonment. Read Nathan Winograd’s “Redemption” http://www.nathanwinograd.com/
If a law was passed the ONLY people who would curb breeding are those who:
1) Breed responsibly already
2) Breed infrequently already
3) Screen buyers carefully
4) Have mandatory return policies if the dog requires re-homing.
The rest of the backyard breeders and puppymills would continue on as usual *AND* if there was a deficit in number of pups produced people would begin importing pups from outside the country (do we REALLY want poorly bred street dogs from underdeveloped countries bringing in disease?).
If such a law were passed the results that are likely are:
1) Increase in disease due to people not bringing their “illegal” pups to the vet
2) Increase in price which would lead to more imports and more underground (garage, shed, attic) breeding.
3) Gene pool of rare breeds decimated
