How to know when a timing belt has been left in a car?

I think my timing belt drive has left. A tree mechanic Shadow has told me that was the problem, but I'm not sure. I have a 1998 model Chevy Malibu.

If the timing belt has slipped (jumped a tooth) lose power and be hard to start, if you can even start it. If the band was completely (broke), its engine still not running. timing belt connects thecam from the crankshaft to the shaft and keeps opening and closing valves at the right time in relation to the pistons. Once broken, the starter can sping the engine, but the valves are opening and closing. At worst, if a valve stretches and no hydraulic lifts, you could end up with a value bent and broken piston. I've never seen it happen but my cars were Chevys hydraulic lifter. As for replacing it. THe hardest thing is just get to it. With a good selection tool, usually have a couple of hours to replace. A Ford Pinto with the covers missing and only took 10 minutes to replace. A Honda with all covers in place took 4 hours. Trivia additional timing belts are sometimes created for the operation of water pumps and other accessories. In short, if the belt broke, not moving. If you skipped a tooth, and is still moving, power and fuel economy stench. Mark H

Thanks for the post. I didn’t envision that a valve can be bent or a piston be broken but I now realized that it could. I do have to have the belts in my cars changed, do you know any original equipment manufacturers in Japan that I can order from?
